Santa Elena is a midsize town along the southern shores of Lake Petén Itza. The town has decent restaurants and services, but travelers are usually more interested in visiting Flores, which is set on an island not far from Santa Elena. Flores is cute and charming and is a good place to pass an afternoon. In other areas around Lake Petén Itza, travelers can go hiking, birding, kayaking, or zip lining.
