Santa Elena is a midsize town along the southern shores of Lake Petén Itza. The town has decent restaurants and services, but travelers are usually more interested in visiting Flores, which is set on an island not far from Santa Elena. Flores is cute and charming and is a good place to pass an afternoon. In other areas around Lake Petén Itza, travelers can go hiking, birding, kayaking, or zip lining.
Maya Internacional is set close to the shores of Lake Petén Itza—not surprisingly, this hotel enjoys lovely views of the lake. The hotel is quiet and tranquil. The bridge to Flores is a short, 3-minute walk away.
The hotel has 28 guest rooms arranged in 2 buildings. The rooms are simple but are clean and tastefully decorated. All rooms enjoy beautiful views of Flores and Lake Petén Itza. The rooms have a private bathroom, hot water shower, and cable TV. The temperature is kept at a comfortable level with ceiling fans and air conditioning. All rooms have a balcony.
At the restaurant guests can enjoy both international and national cuisine. The restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and serves a nice range of food. It also has great views of the lake and is a nice place to relax at sunset. Breakfast is served on a veranda overlooking the Lake Petén Itza.
When things heat up here, you can take a swim in the pool to cool off—this is especially nice after a long day in Tikal. There are chairs for sunbathing and also a private beach where you can sit and look out over the water. Feeling a little sluggish after travel? Head to the hotel’s gym for some exercise.
Free wireless Internet is available in the lobby and restaurant area. Other services of Maya Internacional include parking, laundry service, currency exchange, and a safety deposit box at the reception. Additionally, there is a conference room that can hold up to 100 people—this is a good place to host business meetings, weddings, or other events.
