Finca Filadelfia is a coffee plantation set on a beautiful piece of property on the outskirts of La Antigua. The property extends across a range of habitats – including coniferous forests and cloud forests – that host all sorts of bird species.
The estate is divided into the following areas and ecosystems—shade coffee, from 5,217–6,463 feet (1,590–1970 m); pine forests, from 6,463–7,454 feet (1970–2,272 m); and cloud forests, from 7,454–8,070 feet (2,272–2,460 m).
The tour starts at the center of Finca Filadelfia. Tour participants will board a large truck and drive up the mountain to the cloud forest. You’ll get off the truck and walk to the highest point on the mountain, a spot known as “La Rueda.” From here, you’ll explore the cloud forest and slowly make your way down through other types of forests and ecosystems. At the end of the tour, the truck will take you back to where you started and you’ll enjoy a fresh cup of coffee.
The cloud forest is set at the highest elevation, and it is here that the tour will begin. You’ll walk along trails that lead through forests dominated by aguacatillo and oak trees. Commonly sighted species include hummingbirds, trogons, sparrows, and thrushes. At a somewhat lower elevation, you’ll see cypress, pine, cedar, and rosewood trees inhabited by woodpeckers, red-tailed hawks, blue-throated motmots, swallows, toucans, and orioles. More than 170 bird species have been seen here.
This tour is a great option for travelers who want to get outside and search for birds. It gives you an excellent understanding of some of the ecosystems (and animals that inhabit them) that are present in Guatemala. The tour lasts around 4-5 hours.
