Because of its spectacular variety of birds, this reserve has been categorized as an Important Bird Area (IBA). With around 345 acres (139 ha), Finca Patrocinio provides an ample bird habitat for as many as 100 different species of birds. Species to look out for include the white-bellied chachalaca, a bird found only in Central America. You’ll recognize it by its white underside, brown wings, and bright red wattle.
Finca Patrocinio’s subtropical humid forest is a perfect habitat for these unusual birds. Other species you can look out for include the mangrove cuckoo, the ruby-throated hummingbird, and if you’re lucky, the nocturnal northern potoo.
Finca Patrocinio also specializes in agrotourism, growing and harvesting several varieties of plants that are unique to Guatemala’s humid environment. Ginger flowers, rambutan, and mangosteen make this reserve a colorful and scenic spot to explore. During your visit, you’ll stay overnight at the reserve’s eco-conscious lodge, which is supplied with renewable power by a hydroelectric plant.
