Most hotels are set along the shores of Lake Atitlán. The Maya village of San Marcos is located on higher ground above the shoreline. San Marcos has an exquisite view of the lake’s three volcanoes.

San Marcos will appeal to tranquil New Age types. There isn’t much partying here; rather, the focus is internal. The main draws of San Marcos are yoga courses, meditation retreats, and the healing center, which offers reflexology, massage, crystal therapy, and acupuncture.

San Marcos has excellent spots for swimming or kayaking. Hikes in the surrounding area are also possible.
