Posada de Santiago

Santiago Atitlán lies within an inlet on the southwest corner of Lake Atitlán. With the San Pedro and Atitlán volcanoes rising around it, the town’s setting is spectacular. The town has a colorful market on Fridays and Saturdays and an old church that was built during the 16th century. Horseback rides and kayak adventures can be enjoyed in the surrounding area.

Posada de Santiago is a lovely hotel set along the shores of Lake Atitlán. The staff is friendly, the setting is stunning, and the accommodations are comfortable. What more could you want?

Guests are treated to their own stone cottage while staying at this hotel. The cottages are decorated with attractive Guatemalan décor and feel homey. With stone walls, hot water showers and a fireplace, the rooms feel both rustic and warm. Some have a coffee maker, cable TV, bathtub, living room, and kitchen. Many cottages can sleep 4–5 people. Hammocks and a private garden are found outside each cottage.

The hotel’s restaurant is one of the best in the area. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are served at set times, with meals that include Asian, European, Guatemalan, and American influences. The breads, sauces, and pastries are all homemade—even the coffee is grown, processed, and roasted by the couple that runs this hotel.

Across the road from the restaurant are the hotel’s lakefront gardens. In addition to some seriously lush plants, the gardens also include a solar-heated swimming pool, hot tub, and sauna. There is a dock that extends into the lake that is a good place to jump into the water or launch kayaks.

While not in the water you can lounge on the sundeck or in a hammock, all while enjoying selections from the hotel’s lakefront full bar and menu service. Other activities here include relaxing with a deep-tissue massage or getting your heart pumping with some exercise at the hotel gym. Guests with smart phones, tablets, or laptops can connect to wireless Internet in the lodge.
