Sachatamia Lodge is 296 acres (120 ha) of cloud forest, in the protected forest of Mindo-Nambillo. This environment is home to some of the most rare sights in the word.
Sachatamia has the largest numbers of bird species found anywhere in the world. The air is thick with hummingbirds, and you can also expect to see toucans and cock-of-the-rocks. Cock-of-the-Rocks are bright red, and have an unforgettably strange shape. On your hikes through the forest, you should also keep an eye out for armadillos, agoutis (a type of rodent), and anteaters. Cloud forests are one of the few places humid enough for orchids to grow in the wild, and you might be lucky enough to stumble across one on your treks. Take a night hike to see the owls and the tree frogs that come out after the sunset.
There is a game room in the lodge with a pool table. You can also take a break from the humidity in the lodge’s pool. Bring a book or a cup of coffee to the elegant sitting room, and read the newspaper while you repose on the glamorous wooden furniture.
With their wood-paneled walls and plush carpeting, the rooms here feel cozy, calm, and quiet. This is the perfect setting for getting lots of sleep and feeling energized for a day of active adventure in the rainforest. It can get cold in the forest at night, so rooms come with space heaters.
The lodge’s restaurant will provide all of your meals, and serves expertly prepared gourmet cuisine. If you want some more options for meals, the town of Mindo is only a 10-minute trip from the hotel. There you’ll find a good selection of restaurants.
