IncludedMake a trip to the Bíotopo del Quetzál to look for quetzals with jewel-toned green plumage. Their feathers were used as currency by the pre-Hispanic Mayans. They dwell in the branches of the aguacatillo trees, which are identifiable by their avocado-shaped fruits.
The quetzals are elusive, but you’ll have plenty of other things to see in this humid forest. This atmosphere sprouts rare plants in every nook and cranny. Orchids and mushrooms grow along the hiking paths. Look for the reserve’s Grandfather trees – some of the specimens in the Bíotopo del Quetzál are 450 years old.
Cypress, walnut, and pepper trees make this Bíotopo a resplendent habitat. This hike will bring you past waterfalls and natural swimming pools – lovely places to cool off during your hike. While you look for the quetzal, you also have the chance to see the black-capped nightingale thrush, shining honeycreeper, and golden-cheeked warblers. Your bilingual tour guide will provide you with a list of exotic birds that dwell in the forest, so you can keep track of what you've spotted on your trip.
