Santa Elena is a midsize town located along Lake Peten Itza. The town is has decent restaurants and shopping options, and is close to the cute island town of Flores. Flores is small and charming - you can walk along its cobbled streets and pop into cafes and stores. Outside of these two towns, travelers can enjoy hiking, swimming, kayaking, and birding in some nearby areas.
Peten Esplendido is a comfortable, fairly modern hotel in Santa Elena. It’s located right along the water and is very close to the bridge that leads to Flores. This accessible location is much appreciated by guests. The hotel staff is attentive and helpful.
The hotels rooms are clean and simply decorated. All rooms are kept cool with air conditioning and fans, and have an in-room safety deposit box for storing valuables. The private bathrooms have hot water showers, toiletries, and a hair dryer. All rooms also have a cable TV and international telephone. The beds are comfortable and have bedside reading lamps. There are nice balconies that look out at the lake, Flores, and the hotel pool.
The restaurant serves international cuisine at both the indoor air-conditioned dining room and on an outdoor terrace. The terrace has nice views of Flores and Lake Peten Itza. There are dinner options like grilled fish and a breakfast buffet that’s especially tasty. Room service is also available.
The hotel has a large freshwater swimming pool and Jacuzzi. After a trip to Tikal, it’s very nice to jump in the pool and then warm up in the Jacuzzi. There is a poolside bar that’s well stocked with all sorts of international beers, wines, and liquors. Kicking back by the pool with a cold beer is pleasant.
The hotel provides a courtesy shuttle between the hotel and the Mundo Maya International Airport, which is located just outside of Santa Elena. There is a business center with Internet access, as well as several meeting rooms that can be used for seminars or special events. The meeting rooms can hold up to 250 people. Wireless Internet is available in public areas, including the restaurant and all event spaces.
