Most of Peru is mosquito-free. The only places where you are likely to encounter mosquitos is in lowland areas around the Amazon Basin, as well as other rainforests and cloud forests. Some travelers have been bitten by mosquitos at Machu Picchu. Mosquitos can carry disease and it's important to protect yourself using bug spray, long-sleeved shirts, and long-sleeved pants. Sleeping in rooms with screens over the windows and/or mosquito netting is also a good idea.
