Crime does occur in Ecuador, but most travelers have a safe and crime-free experience here. The most common crimes against tourists are petty theft and armed robbery. Violence against travelers is uncommon, but is has occured before. By taking a few simple precautions, you can have a safe and enjoyable trip.
Avoid displaying expensive items while out in public, and store valuables and cash in a safety deposit box at your hotel. Don't hike alone, and if you're a woman, try to travel in a group. Stick to tourist-friendly areas and popular destinations. And if you're robbed, don't resist. Give the theives what they ask for and dont fight back.
