Rocks and sea creatures with sharp spines can pose a threat when you wade into the shallows of Ecuadorian beaches. Some beaches, like those found in the resort town of Atacames, have a strong undertow. You can’t rely on a lifeguard to be present, so research the ocean conditions before you take the plunge. Sea snakes also wash up on the beach in some areas – they are poisonous, so don’t handle them.
