Tap water in Ecuador is not safe to drink. It often contains bacteria that will upset your stomach. Carry purified, bottled water with you. You can also bring iodine tablets with you to purify water on the go. In a pinch, boiling water for a few minutes will kill bacteria.
Be careful of fruit juices – they’re often diluted with water. They can also be mixed with milk, which may be unpasteurized. Ice cubes are typically made from tap water, so make sure to ask for your drink without ice.
