The town of Río Hondo is located about halfway between Guatemala City and the Caribbean Coast. It’s mainly used as stopping point for travelers who need food or a hotel while passing through this region.
Río Hondo is located at a junction on the highway that leads to Puerto Barrios. The town has an assortment of good restaurants and hotels, most of which have swimming pools. There’s also a water park outside town that has water slides and pools. The warm climate lends itself to swimming.
The road south from Río Hondo passes through the lowland towns of Zacapa and Chiquimula before ascending into the mountains. This is the overland route you’ll take to reach the Mayan ruins at Copán.
