El Silencio Volcano Hike

Follow a certified naturalist on a trail near the base of the El Silencio Volcano. It’s so visually striking here that this reserve has served as the setting for multiple big-budget Hollywood movies, including Spy Kids 2. This is an easy day trip from the La Fortuna area, and offers a nice change of pace from the standard Arenal itinerary.

Volcanoes create a unique ecosystem that make the surrounding terrain especially diverse. The El Silencio Reserve covers 555 acres (224 ha), nearly half of which is primary rainforest. This pristine forest is home to rare plants and animals, including old-growth ceiba trees. As you hike, you’ll learn about the volcano’s history, including its latest eruption in 1968.

You can choose from tours that depart at either 8:00 AM or 3:00 PM, and it takes just 15 minutes to reach El Silencio from Arenal. Getting a little ways off the beaten path is a great way to ensure you see some exotic birds in a tranquil atmosphere. Don’t worry about bringing bottled water – your guide will provide drinks for your refreshment as you hike.
