The Hidden Valley Reserve spreads across 27 acres (11 ha). The reserve was purchased in 1979 and is one of the area's oldest ecotourism projects.

Hidden Valley is situated at a lower elevation and is mainly comprised of pre-montane forest, which is distinct from the region's higher elevation cloud forests. The reserve is located within a transition zone between tropical wet and seasonal moist forests. Its abundance of fruit trees makes the reserve an ideal home for a variety of birds, mammals, and exotic insects.

It's estimated that upwards of 80 percent of wildlife is active at night. This tour is ideal for travelers who wish to discover the nocturnal wonders of the forest. The tours are led by bilingual, professionally trained naturalist guides. The guides will spot and explain various creatures that you come across, including snakes, spiders (especially tarantulas), tree frogs, coatimundis, agoutis, sloths, and armadillos.

The tour begins at 5:00 PM. After a beautiful sunset, tour participants will first observe diurnal species as they prepare to settle in for the night. As darkness falls, you'll watch the forest reawaken and notice nocturnal creatures as they begin to emerge.

Visitors are advised to wear long pants and covered footwear. It's also a good idea to bring a jacket, as the nighttime temperatures can be pretty cool. Flashlights are provided.

What to Bring

Warm clothes, long pants, hiking shoes, insect repellent, rain gear, jacket, camera (optional).

Traveler Comments

Rained very hard but I was fine with it given we are in a cloud forest. Saw lots of interesting animals- snakes, walking sticks, frogs, scorpions and a massive tarantula

- CHRIS K, JUL 2019

This was definitely a treat! The nature preserve where the hike takes place has one of the most beautiful views of the sunset I have ever seen. The entire grounds that we walked was beautiful and it was exciting being in the forest at night. We saw a Mexican porcupine in a tree, an opossum, many sleeping birds, a beetle that lit up like a firefly, a rhinoceros katydid, a tarantula, and even the skin from a scorpion! And the ants and their ant hills were fascinating! The tour guide was great and was very knowledgable.
