Is a Driver's License All I Need To Drive in Costa Rica And Rent a Car?
Renters/Drivers must be at least 21 years old and have an official driver's license that has been issued by a state or government in order to drive a car in Costa Rica. The license must be an official license from the USA, Canada, Germany, Brazil or any other national equivalent to an official license to drive.
In order to rent the vehicle you also must have a major US credit card in order to cover the liability deposit should you get an accident and be required to pay the deposit amount. Full coverage liability insurance is also available but has a more expensive daily rate than the mandatory liability insurance.
If you decide not to rent a car, you can take the bus, shared shuttles, or a private transport.
P.S. Vehicle insurance isn't the only thing you need to keep you safe and sound during your getaway. Learn more about basic travel insurance and why it's important in our article "Going Abroad? This is Why Travel Insurance is A MUST!" Then, get your personalized quote here.
