Costa Rica

Costa Rica is all you've heard and more — from adventure vacations to romantic getaways, and family trips to solo travel, part of the magic of Costa Rica is that it almost seems to transform itself based on your travel needs. You can explore mountains, cloud forests, beaches, and more. In each of these unique destinations, you'll find hotels to match your activities and personality.

Costa Rica Hotels
Great for Families
Great for Families

We have traveled throughout Costa Rica and visited hundreds of hotels. Most Costa Rican hotels are welcoming to families, but the hotels we’ve included in this category stand out among the rest. Many of them are perfect for families, because they offer plenty of “kid friendly” activities right at the hotel. Some have spacious living room areas that allow guests to prepare meals and relax in a larger space. Other hotels simply have a great family-orientated atmosphere.

Honeymoon
Honeymoon

Honeymoon Hotels are similar to our luxury class of hotels in terms of their amenities. However, the location and services of these hotels create a romantic setting and memories to last a lifetime. From relaxing on stunning beaches to enjoying romantic dinners overlooking some of the world’s most beautiful rainforests and ocean vistas, your honeymoon hotel can be exactly as you imagine it.

Luxury
Luxury

Expect only the best from these exclusive lodging options in Costa Rica. As luxury hotels, the accommodations are 100% invested in customer satisfaction and quality service, striving to meet an exceptionally high standard. Often, specialty restaurants and a wide variety of guest services make these hotel properties and resorts a distinctive treat.

Eco Lodges
Eco Lodges

Looking to get off the grid and away from it all? Wake up nestled in the canopy of the rainforest or in a cabana on the beach. Spend your days roaming through pristine settings like Corcovado National Park on the Osa Peninsula, one of the many reserves that your eco-lodge works to protect. In keeping with their strong commitment to the conservation and protection of natural resources, eco-lodges offer activities with a low impact on the environment like hiking, snorkeling, and bird watching. Food served in the restaurants is as local and seasonal as possible, and you can expect simple, yet charming accommodations that emphasize the enjoyment of Costa Rica’s stunningly diverse beauty.

Beachfront
Beachfront

Looking for fresh ocean breezes, a view of the waves, or the sound of crashing surf? Then a beachfront hotel may be just the spot. These hotels sit right on the beach, and they provide direct access to sandy shores and wonderful ocean waves. They are a great place to enjoy a few days of beach-time relaxation. The hotel properties offer a variety of room types- some directly in front of the beach and others nestled in the shade a short distance away.

Sustainable
Sustainable

Costa Rica is a country of fantastic natural beauty and delicate ecosystems. As a visitor to its impressive landscape, one seeks to tread lightly and support efforts that will help to preserve its natural wonders into the future. Some hotels in the country have led the way in implementing policies that seek a better balance with the environment and community. These properties have taken steps to significantly reduce waste, toxicity, and consumption of resources. Many have developed programs in areas such as recycling, reforestation, and environmental education. For the conscientious traveler, these accommodations offer some of the best places to enjoy a mid-range or luxury vacation with minimal environmental impact. For more information on sustainable tourism in Costa Rica, see the Anywhere Costa Rica Sustainability.

Hilltop
Hilltop

Hilltop hotels offer guests panoramic views of the stunning Costa Rican landscape. For travelers who prefer to stay above the fray, so to speak, these elevated hotel locations provide sweeping views of the surrounding terrain- over the mountainous and verdant forest, out lowland expanses, or across a deep blue ocean. They are often great places to enjoy a sunset or watch the mist roll in over the trees.

Yoga
Yoga

Yoga Hotels offer guests a selection of yoga courses and retreats. At these hotels, you may begin your day with sun salutations or practice plank pose under the evening sky. Yoga Hotels tend to focus on health and wellness, and as such often have healthy dining options and a tranquil environment. Some hotels offer daily yoga classes while others specialize in weeklong retreats. Most courses are open to all skill levels.

Boutique
Boutique

If you’re looking for a smaller, charming and more intimate experience, a Boutique Hotel may be right for you. These hotels tend to be stylish and hip, showcasing local artists and offering specialty food. Most have a restaurant, bar and lounge for guests to enjoy, and create a welcoming atmosphere that encourages relaxation.

Bed and Breakfast
Bed and Breakfast

Bed and breakfast style accommodations typically offer a more intimate environment, fostering an atmosphere that is at once relaxed and personal. Many are small and quaint, and spiced with their own unique flavor. The familial environs make these excellent places for meeting your hosts or getting to know other guests. And of course, there’s no better way to begin your day than with a carefully prepared homemade breakfast.

Cabins and Villas
Cabins and Villas

If you’re looking for a peaceful and private accommodation, cabins and villas can be a great option. Rather, than close-proximity rooms within a single building, cabin and villas form a separate structure. Guests at these hotel properties walk on short paths between the reception, restaurant, and their own private cabins, villas, or bungalows. Many cabin and villa accommodations also provide more amenities than a standard room. They can include a full kitchen and a separate living area that are ideal for longer stays. (Please note that some units form a duplex, rather than a single unit.)

Isolated
Isolated

Want to get away from the daily grind and immerse yourself in a luxurious, tranquil setting? Consider staying at a remote resort, where your secluded tropical accommodation is the destination. Since remote resorts are generally located in a secluded setting far from any town, they provide everything you need either onsite or nearby. Surround yourself with the many natural wonders Costa Rica has to offer, including rare and diverse wildlife, majestic rainforests, stunning waterfalls, and breathtaking volcanoes. Back at the resort, enjoy fine dining with meals created using local, organic ingredients. Pamper yourself in rooms that offer jacuzzis, fireplaces, and private balconies with breathtaking views of the ocean or the rainforest. Here you will find all of the comforts of a luxury resort, while enjoying a wide variety of activities in the lush and beautiful countryside.

City Center
City Center

For those who prefer a location where all the action is, these town center hotels are located near the area’s bustling bus stops, restaurants, and nightlife options. While they may not offer the peace and quiet of more secluded hotels, there is an increase in convenience, especially for visitors who wish to spend time with locals and have access to shops, bars, and the Internet.

Farm Hotel
Farm Hotel

As the name suggests, Farm Hotels are rural, eco-friendly outfits that combine a working farm with a hotel experience. Guests of these hotels will have the opportunity to observe – and in many cases, interact with – the various elements of the farm. That might mean helping to milk a cow, feed a horse, or harvest fresh veggies. The setting of these hotels is great for nature lovers, as they often have easy access to hiking trails and beautiful outdoor environments.

Vacation Home
Vacation Home

Rather than a traditional hotel room, vacation homes offer a unique alternative for your stay in Costa Rica. Vacation homes include fully equipped kitchens, and in some cases they can accommodate large groups of people. The locations are well managed, and many times they are exclusively rented to tourist visitors. One can expect a clean and well maintained property upon arrival. Because there is a great deal of preparation involved, these properties often have minimum-length stays, and managers may encourage longer stays by offering lower daily rates.

All Inclusive
All Inclusive

All Inclusive Costa Rica Hotels are best for stress-free planning and a hassle-free stay. They offer both meals and accommodation for one set price, leaving you to enjoy plentiful rest and relaxation. A variety of these all-inclusive resorts are located near popular beach destinations, while others are found in remote regions of the country where nearby restaurants and town centers are almost non-existent.

Midrange
Midrange

Midrange hotels are at the foundation of tourism in Costa Rica, making up the vast majority of hotels in the country. In many cases these hotels began as small family run businesses, and over a number of years they have grown to improve their services and amenities. Generally, these hotels range from $80 to $130 per night, and they are some of the best options for most visitors to Costa Rica.

Budget
Budget

The accommodations below are great budget travel options for your stay in Costa Rica. As budget hotels, they are generally more affordable, but they are not backpacker hotels with dorm beds. They do not have all the amenities of a luxury hotel, but they present clean and comfortable rooms for a fair price.

Business
Business

Whether you’re a tireless travelling executive or a fresh-faced entrepreneur, these Business Hotels have amenities that make it easy (and even enjoyable) to conduct business in Costa Rica. Wireless internet, printing/faxing services and conference rooms come standard, and many hotels are located near the airport. The staff at these hotels is helpful and capable of arranging meetings or special events.

Airport
Airport

There are currently two international airports in Costa Rica. The largest is Juan Santamaria Airport (SJO), which is located north of the city of San Jose in the Central Valley region of Alajuela. The other is the Daniel Oduber Airport (LIR), which is located right outside of Liberia, Costa Rica in the Guanacaste region. Hotels and accommodations included in this section are conveniently located nearby the airports - only a few minutes away from SJO or LIR.

Enjoy a honeymoon or anniversary of romance and indulgence when you stay in Uvita or Dominical, or a sustainable adventure for two when you find yourselves in Sarapiqui or Drake Bay. Perhaps the person you're celebrating and learning to love again is yourself; Costa Rica can accommodate your inner journey. Choose a hotel that offers yoga courses or a full-fledged yoga retreat — you can find them all over the country, from Tamarindo to Arenal.

Want to take the family on a vacation where everyone can unplug? How about lodgings that double as working farms? Costa Rica's farm hotels will have you in the heart of the country — explore destinations including Arenal, Monteverde, and San Isidro General. Not only will you enjoy peace and quiet, you can even teach the children about sustainability and where their food comes from. The best part? Most farms offer an opportunity to assist with some of the chores, so you'll get to know the animals and harvest some of the produce you've been enjoying!

Wherever you choose to stay, you won't be too far from adventures such as zip lining through rainforests, observing amazing wildlife in cloud forests, trekking across mountains and volcanoes, and napping on beaches. Your perfect vacation begins with the perfect hotel, and both are waiting for you in beautiful Costa Rica.

One suggestion would be to let people know the amount of time to drive from hotel to hotel. If I would have known, I would have stayed longer in fewer hotels.
