Coast to Coast Budget Vacation
We didn’t think we could explore so much of Costa Rica with our budget, but Anywhere pulled it off amazingly. All the exciting excursions and relaxing days by the beach are in our memories forever.
The ultimate vacation in Costa Rica…
My partner and I were looking to book a long vacation in Costa Rica, exploring as much as we could with our limited budget. We went to Puerto Viejo de Limon, Tortuguero, Arenal, Monteverde, and Manuel Antonio. We were happy about Anywhere’s recommendations for budget lodgings that would allow us to splurge a day or two at Laguna Lodge Tortuguero.
The friendliest Ticos…
Our driver from Guapiles to Arenal was exceptional. Throughout the entire three hours, he was able to share a lot of interesting information about the country that entertained us for the whole trip. In Playa Espadilla, we met who we believe to be the friendliest and most open Ticos from the entire trip. Fernando and Carlos rent jet skis and inflatable boats on the beach. We had a great time chatting and they gave us great tips on how to have the most fun with water sports. I’d definitely recommend any travelers to try it out and have a chance to mingle with the locals.
Places you'll stay
San Jose
"Chepe," as the city is referred to by locals, is the capital city of Costa Rica and a hub for modern Costa Rican culture. It's also where most visitors depart for tours of central Costa Rica's volcanoes and coffee plantations. Before you leave, take a fun-filled tour of the city's monuments and parks, and maybe sample the burgeoning craft beer scene.
Puerto Viejo de Limon
Known for its laidback attitude and famous for it's surfing, Puerto Viejo de Limon beckons visitors to come experience Costa Rica’s eccentric side. The village’s cultural influences are interesting to be sure: a mix of Afro-Caribbean, Bribri Indian, tico and hippyesque counterculture, this small port town is an anthropological study in itself. A mere 11 miles (18 km) from Cahuita, Puerto Viejo is accessible via Highway 36 or by simply walking south, along the beach.
Tortuguero
The Caribbean Coast is home to the beautiful town of Tortuguero and it's National Park. This sun drenched zone with its sparsely spaced coastal villages offers a completely laid back and relaxed atmosphere. The culture is vastly different on this coast compared to the rest of the country with its prominent Afro-Caribbean influence notable as well in the delicious cuisine found here.
Arenal Volcano and La Fortuna

Pacuare River
The Pacuare River, whose headwaters begin on the Atlantic slope in the Talamanca mountain range, runs about 68 miles (108 km) until reaching the Caribbean Sea on Costa Rica's central coast. This is the quintessential tropical river, with stunning scenery and abounding wildlife.
Lake Arenal
Lake Arenal, lying adjacent to the Arenal Volcano in the Northern Lowlands of Costa Rica, is the country’s most spectacular lake. With the magnificent Arenal Volcano to the east and rolling hills and forested slopes all around, the scenery couldn’t be better. Add to that a number of activities that includes world-class windsurfing and sailboarding, fishing, kayaking, bird watching and more, and you have the makings for a spectacular destination.
Manuel Antonio National Park
Created in 1972 to preserve the richness of the forest and the idyllic beaches, Manuel Antonio is home to many of Costa Rica's endangered species.
