El Manantial Lodge

El Manantial Lodge is set in San Gerardo de Dota, a charming mountain town that isn't on the radar of most tourists. This area provides visitors with awesome bird watching, angling, and hiking opportunities.

El Manantial Lodge

San Gerardo de Dota

Located just an hour and a half from San José, San Gerardo de Dota is nestled into the Savegre River Valley and borders the Talamanca Mountain Range. The area is home to over 200 species of birds, including tanagers, hummingbirds and resplendent quetzals. Not surprisingly, the Los Quetzales National Park is a popular spot to search for birds and other animals, as well as hike through three types of rainforest. The Savegre River offers excellent fishing and rafting opportunities.

El Manantial Lodge sits along a verdant hillside in the Los Santos Mountains. As an eco- and agro-tourism lodge, El Manantial believes in the fusion of tourism, sustainability and conservation.

Run by an enthusiastic owner, El Manantial Lodge is an excellent place to experience the rural life of Costa Rica. Trails splay out from the central lodge, offering guests the chance to easily explore the nearby wilderness. A three-hour hike leads to an impressive waterfall, and there are opportunities for riding horses through the forest. Guests are invited to visit the Lodge’s own farm to learn how to milk a cow and make cheese, or else pick blackberries in nearby bushes. There is a small pond on the property that’s stocked with trout, and any fish that are caught can be brought back to the lodge and cooked.

There is a communal sitting area for guests to relax in, as well as a fireplace surrounded by couches – definitely a nice spot to spend an evening with friends. The onsite restaurant offers healthy and local meals. The food is traditional Costa Rican and vegetarian options are available. After a day on the trails, have the staff fire up the steam bath and spend some time unwinding. There is also a large hall that is surrounded by windows and is perfect for yoga or other activities/events.

The rooms at El Manantial Lodge are simple, clean and comfortable. Wooden floors and large windows give them a rustic feel. All come equipped with a private hot water bathroom.
